The Walk That Changed Everything
How one young man's 20-mile journey became a testament to the power of perseverance
The Walk That Changed Everything
Walter Carr, who was 20 years old, had to make a choice that would change his life when his car broke down the night before his first day at a new job. A lot of people would have called in sick. Walter put on his shoes at midnight and started walking. He had to walk 20 miles through neighborhoods in Alabama that he didn't know to get to his job at a moving company. | ![]() |
He walked alone in the dark for hours. There was no fanfare or audience; just a young man who wouldn't break his word.
The police found him still walking at 4 a.m. They didn't just offer to help him after hearing his story. They bought him breakfast and drove him the rest of the way because they were so moved by his quiet determination.
Jenny Lamey, the homeowner, was so moved by Walter's dedication that she posted his story online when he got there. It quickly went viral and got to CEO Luke Marklin, who made a very unusual choice. Marklin walked up to Walter and gave him the keys to his own Ford Escape, which was almost new.
Walter's eyes filled with tears. He said, "I've never been the kind of person who gives up," his voice breaking. "I'm going to keep going no matter what." At that moment, persistence and kindness came together. A 20-mile walk showed what kind of person you are, showing that sometimes the longest journeys start with the simple choice to never give up.
Walter's story shows us that heroes don't always wear capes. Sometimes they just wear walking shoes and have an unshakeable faith that the journey is worth it.
